Summary

We were originally founded here at UVM in 1893, as the 48th chapter of Kappa Sigma in the United States. After a brief absence from campus, we received our re-charter in September 2007. Since then, we have shown nothing short of greatness, quickly becoming one of the most prominent and well liked chapters at the University. We have been a "Gold Level Chapter" from 2008-2010, winning awards for our service to the community as well as our risk management and academic programs. In addition, in 2009 we were named the University of Vermont "Chapter of the Year" and the Kappa Sigma "Most Improved Chapter". Over the past two years as a chapter we have performed over 4,000 hours of community service, as well as raised over $5,000 for different philanthropic organizations including the Fisher House Foundation for the families of wounded soldiers and Relay for Life. We are an organization focused on lifelong education, but are also well versed in creating strong brotherhood bonds in social settings through regular brotherhood nights and events at our chapter house.

Kappa Sigma bases its action on the four pillars: Fellowship, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service.

Organization Facts

Originally founded in 1400 in Bologna, Italy for protection against a horrible tyrant, the traditional founding of Kappa Sigma took place at the University of Virginia on December 10, 1869. Our fraternity was founded by the "Five Friends and Brothers", five students at the University with a common goal of leadership, fellowship, scholarship, and service, the four pillars upon which our distinguished fraternity still stands. There are over 13,500 undergraduate brothers of Kappa Sigma on over 250 college campuses, as well as over 175,000 living alumni. Every brother of our fraternity is charged to actively participate in the fraternity's community service program, "A Greater Cause", as well as in the personal goal setting plan called "Brothers in Action". Kappa Sigma rewards both individuals and chapters who excel in these programs. Kappa Sigma's headquarters are located in Charlottesville, Virginia, where most of the fraternity's operations take place.
